Asian American Adolescent's Connection To
Music and Identity

Music and Emotions 6

CIABs are musical journeys. By listening, we can follow teenagers’ lives as they unfold.

As researchers, we try to follow a teenager’s journey by employing a research methodology – Music Analysis.

We use Music Analysis to extract, in this case, a teen’s identity from listening to the final cultural identity audio biography.

Music analysis is where we examine the how the content of the CIAB is structured. Because CIABs are intentional, crafted arrangements of music, movie/tv quotes, spoken word, and include intentional DJ affects, we can dive into each part of the CIAB to help us in building the teenager’s archetype.

When we are developing archetype, we first separate the past, present and future content as the CIABs unfold in this manner.

Then, we listen piece by piece and focus on the lyrics and how they are sung as well as the instruments (which instruments are used and how are they arranged).

When teenagers talk about the music they love, they either mention the lyrics within a song, the specific band/singer playing the song, or the general feeling the song evokes.

Although we may not initially know why a song is chosen, when we listen to the entire CIAB we start to learn the teenager’s preferences.
